  • SEO is too important too be left to the SEO department

Marketing is too important to be left to the marketing department.

I believe that many of you have read this line before. Seth Godin quoted it in his “Purple Cow”, the book which I’m reading right now and which gave me an inspiration for this post.

SEO is now an industry, a big industry indeed. A lot of money, a lot of work and a lot of competition. Yes, a lot of competition. A lot. I believe that there is no market today that is not saturated with at least 20 products which help you in one way or another. SEO itself is a great example, how many SEO companies are there now? How many of them could you find 15 years ago? The market got saturated, it is a fact.

How to create purple SEO cow?

Your are new, you know how to do seo, you have optimized a couple of sites and you have great results. Now you want to start your seo company, how can you do it? Legal parts of starting a company are not important, what is important is how to market yourself between thousands of other seo companies?

    Purple Cow

    The solution

Call your company “Pruple Cow SEO” :). Ok, I’m kidding. First thing that comes to mind when marketing a SEO company is to do SEO for it. Wait, didn’t you say that the market is too saturated? I’m glad that you paid attention. Market is too saturated to do plain old SEO even though it is the only thing your company does.

In order to stand out give you clients something that they want, free tools, widgets, applications. Build a blog. Give stuff for free. Connect with bloggers.

Bloggers can help you a lot. By connecting I don’t mean buying links/reviews but be friends, post about each other.

    The ultimate solution

You and your team could be insane enough to name your company something like “Purple Cow SEO”. If you do then dress up in purple suits and go to every conference you can afford. I bet that will get you word of mouth advertising and many many backlinks. You don’t believe me? Try it ;)

    Seo search engine

Filed under: SEO by Sasha on February 25, 2007

I was thinking the other day about how hard it is to find good seo and sem related content. I know that when I started it was really hard to find good reliable sites. To help out people new in seo I have created a seo search engine by using Google Coop. You can find it in the sidebar right here on werebu.com.

Since this is the first version (0.001b) there are “only” 69 seo related blogs and forums and a couple of major seo sites. There is a lot of info there so I encourage you to a couple of searches. You will be amazed. I know that I was. I have created it in such way that it searches all the web but concentrates itself on these 69 sites.

More sites will be add every day so that the searches get more and more relevant.

Also, i have updated my Tools, Services, Links and Author subpages so there is something for you to read :)

I hope you will find new content useful. I would like to hear your thoughts about my seo search engine.

Value of Page Rank – Part two

Filed under: SEO by Sasha on January 3, 2007

Yesterday we talked about PR in general, we defined it (thanks to Google) and we ended the article with me telling you that you will have something to read about today.
So here we are, today I am going to talk about how to recognize valuable link partners, how to buy links and does PR really matter to you.

    Link partners

When I talk about link partners I mean those people that you exchange links with. You should always try to exchange links with web sites that are similar to yours (etc. same niche) but not with your direct competition. So what does it have to do with PR? As we said yesterday PR is a result of web sites “voting” for you site. More votes, more PR. Very simple, but not that simple. Since Google realized that webmasters could “cheat” by doing massive link exchange they don’t put too much weight on reciprocal links. I said, not much, I didn’t say any weight!

    Buying links

There will be a time when you will realize that all of your efforts in marketing your site are just not showing any results. You will then consider buying links form other web sites. Doing that will surely help you but it can also make you broke very fast if you don’t know what are you doing. When buying links try to focus on the traffic that link brings, not the PR. PR is not that important for you unless you are planning to sell links too. This brings us to next header.

    Does PR really matter?

If you just want your site to have big PR and don’t really know why then the answer is pretty obvious, PR won’t help you much. Having high PR puts you in a position where you can make some money by selling links but again, if you are not planning to sell links then you shouldn’t worry about PR at all. Some people believe (me included) that PR matters in your rankings, well, it probably does but there are other factors that are much more important so try to work more on them and forget PR for a few months.

    Thank you for your time.

    Value of Page Rank

Filed under: SEO by Sasha on January 2, 2007

Today we are going to talk about Google Page Rank. Page Rank is Google’s way to tell you how valuable your website is. Actually it is better to say how valuable your web page is since all pages within your website have a PR (Page Rank.)

So how does it actually work? (Taken from official Google explanation)

“Page Rank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important.”

Important, high-quality sites receive a higher Page Rank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don’t match your query. So, Google combines Page Rank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of the page’s content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it’s a good match for your query.“

So what does it mean? It means that you want to get as many incoming links as possible since that will boost your PR. To be precise, you want as many quality links. Quality links are those coming form high PR pages that don’t have too much outgoing links. Since PR is a “vote”, you want votes for you to be valuable. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you don’t want any weak incoming links because you never know which of those “weak” links can become very important link during next PR update. In practice this means that you want all incoming links but try to avoid links from link farms. They won’t hurt you but they don’t do anything good for you either.

This is the first part of my “Value of Page Rank” article, next part will be online tomorrow so stay tuned. Second part will deal with buying links and importance of PR for your site.

    Thank you for your time.
